About

Inspired by ancient traditions of contemplative philosophy and practice, the Buddhist Academy of Europe is poised to play a key role in facilitating the integration of Buddhist approaches of intellectual reasoning and experiential insight as vibrant parts of modern academic research and intellectual discovery.

With its long and strong relationship to the Buddhist tradition, and its location in the center of Europe, Austria is an ideal place to locate the Buddhist Academy of Europe.

BAEU will be housed at Rangjung Yeshe Gomde in Austria; a tranquil meditation center in the beautiful Salzkammergut mountains, conducive to study and practice.

Core Principles and Educational Approach

A number of core principles will guide BAEU’s educational approach, which includes and goes beyond academic learning.

  • The university will facilitate conversations between Buddhist thought and scientific research, particularly in areas like psychology, education, and leadership.

This transdisciplinary approach will generate insights into how we can enhance well-being and global flourishing.

  • Students will not only study Buddhist principles but live them through meditation practice and ethical engagement.

This holistic education ensures graduates are prepared as compassionate, resilient leaders.

  • Students will be supported in their personal growth, with a strong focus on well-being, purpose, and ethical clarity. Through immersive study and contemplative practices, they will develop the tools to navigate life’s challenges with resilience, balance, and a deep sense of connection.

This transformative education empowers students to lead lives rooted in compassion and wisdom, shaping not just successful careers but lives of meaning and service.

  • The university serves diverse learners: young people starting their careers, professionals seeking to enhance their work and life through ethical insights, and lifelong learners eager to nourish their minds with meaningful knowledge.

Our programs offer transformative education for every stage of life.

Bachelors and Masters Programs

BAEU will offer a curriculum designed to preserve authentic Buddhist wisdom while integrating it into modern fields where it can make a real difference. In its first five years, BAEU will offer two Bachelor’s and two Master’s programs.

  • This track will focus on preserving and transmitting Buddhist knowledge through philosophy, languages, and practice.

Students will be trained as scholar-practitioners, combining intellectual rigor with lived experience, ensuring the teachings are embodied and authentically transmitted.

  • This track explores how Buddhist principles can be integrated into fields like psychology, education, environmental stewardship, and leadership.

Students will learn how to apply these teachings in ways that address contemporary challenges, promoting mental well-being and wise decision-making.
